1. What is „Business Transformation” at 3M all about – I thought 3M had already transitioned to a new ERP system?
Yes, our European Distribution Centers (EDCs) have already transitioned. However, not all countries and locations have. This will be implemented step by step according to a global rollout plan.
However, Business Transformation involves more than just converting to different corporate software. We are simultaneously simplifying and standardizing many processes in order to make our joint business still easier and more efficient.
2. What will be simpler after this transition?
In the future, you will receive most of the information from one single source, such as conditions and information regarding product availability. The central system will provide you with all the necessary data – and that with the simple press of a button.
3. What will improve? Examples?
You will receive most of the information from one single source. The data quality will be improved on an ongoing basis. You will be able to track orders and compare products. We will respond quickly to your enquiries. Furthermore, delivery quality will improve even more and it will provide better insight into inventories and the inventory management.
You may not experience all the advantages from day one. However, this will come with time and the improvements will be here to stay – as our experience in other countries has shown.
4. How often do we need to go through this process and how long will it take to complete?
Our global implementation plan has started and will progress in phases over the course of the next few years. So far in advance, it is hard to say when precisely each country deployment transition will take place. The plan is extremely complex and will need to remain flexible and undergo further optimizations over time.
The transition will only apply to products that are manufactured in specific countries. We will try to limit any impact to our supply chain, to the best of our ability.
5. When will the transition take place in Germany?
The transition for the sites Neuss, Hilden and Kamen of 3M Germany has taken place on February 2nd. The transition of Dyneon GmbH (site Burgkirchen) will take place on May 3rd.
6. There were indications that an „initial amount of work would fall to customers”? What does that mean for me?
It is possible that some day-to-day interactions with us will change. For example, shipping documents will have a different structure than the current version. Of course, we will keep changes that affect you to a minimum and, if you require adjustments, we will assist in this.
7. Which changes will affect me specifically?
There may be slight impacts to orders and delivery time as a result of this initiative. However, this will only be temporary and for a short period. Minimizing the impact on our customers is our highest priority. Nevertheless, we would like to keep you informed of our plans so that we can address potential issues openly. If you would like to plan your own safety measures – aside from the measures we are taking – we are happy to provide support.
8. What measures will be taken to ensure our security?
We are playing things safe: each change with be checked very carefully and multiple times prior to implementation. Best possible preparation is thus ensured.
One other thing is for sure: we will make every effort to ensure delivery – we will increase our inventories so that we are prepared for any unexpected problems.
Furthermore, we can use the experience we gained during the successful implementation in our other distribution centers. This will ensure a smooth transition.

1. Worum geht es bei der „Business Transformation” bei 3M – ich dachte 3M hätte bereits auf ein neues ERP-System umgestellt?
Ja, unsere Europäischen Logistikzentren (EDCs) sind bereits umgestellt. Aber noch nicht alle Standorte in den Ländern. Dies erfolgt Schritt für Schritt und Land für Land nach einem globalen Plan.
Doch „Business Transformation“ bedeutet mehr als nur die Umstellung auf ein neues System. Denn gleichzeitig standardisieren und homogenisieren wir viele Prozesse – damit unser gemeinsames Business noch einfacher und effizienter wird.
2. Was vereinfacht sich durch die Umstellung?
Sie bekommen in Zukunft die meisten Informationen aus einer Hand – das betrifft auch Konditionen und Informationen zu Produktverfügbarkeiten. Durch das zentrale System liegen alle benötigten Daten für Sie vor. Auf Knopfdruck.
3. Was verbessert sich? Beispiele?
Sie erhalten die meisten Informationen aus einer Hand. Die Datenqualität verbessert sich durchgängig. Sie können Aufträge nachverfolgen. Produkte vergleichen. Erhalten eine schnellere Antwort auf Anfragen. Außerdem wird die Lieferqualität weiter verbessert, und die Transparenz von Lagerbeständen und deren Steuerung ermöglicht.
Vielleicht werden Sie manche Vorteile nicht sofort und am ersten Tag spüren können. Dann aber mit der Zeit, und dafür nachhaltig. Dies zeigen die Erfahrungen aus anderen Ländern.
4. Wie oft müssen wir durch diesen Prozess gehen und wie lange dauert das insgesamt?
Unser globaler Implementierungsplan wird nun phasenweise über die nächsten Jahre umgesetzt. Wann genau welcher Wechsel durchgeführt wird, lässt sich langfristig leider nicht exakt voraussagen, da der Plan sehr komplex ist und flexibel angepasst und optimiert wird.
Die Umstellungen betreffen nur die Produkte, die in den jeweiligen Ländern hergestellt werden. Wir werden die Auswirkungen auf unsere Lieferkette so gering wie möglich halten.
5. Wann wird in Deutschland umgestellt?
Die erste Umstellung in Deutschland fand mit den Standorten Neuss, Hilden und Kamen am 2. Februar 2016 statt. Der Wechsel für die Dyneon GmbH (Standort Burgkirchen) findet am 3. Mai 2016 statt.
6. Es wurde schon gesprochen von „initialem Aufwand für den Kunden“? Was bedeutet das für mich?
Möglicherweise ändern sich einige Dinge in Ihrer täglichen Zusammenarbeit mit uns. Z.B. haben Lieferdokumente in Zukunft einen anderen Aufbau als heute. Selbstverständlich werden wir diesen Aufwand für Sie so gering wie nur möglich halten, und, falls es Anpassungen gibt, dabei auch unterstützen.
7. Welche Auswirkungen wird das speziell für mich haben?
Die Umstellung könnte sich geringfügig auf den Auftragseingang, die Auslieferung und die Lieferzeiten auswirken. Und dies nur für einen kurzen Zeitraum. Wir setzen alles daran, diese eventuellen Auswirkungen auf ein absolutes Minimum zu reduzieren.
Trotzdem möchten wir, dass Sie unsere Pläne kennen und mit uns gemeinsam über potenzielle Probleme offen sprechen. Falls Sie – zusätzlich zu unseren Maßnahmen – eigene und zusätzliche Sicherheitsvorkehrungen ausarbeiten möchten, unterstützen wir Sie gerne.
8. Was tun Sie für unsere Sicherheit?
Wir gehen auf Nummer Sicher: Jeder Wechsel wird mehrfach und genauestens überprüft. Damit garantieren wir die optimale Vorbereitung.
Sicher ist auch: Wir tun alles, um die Lieferfähigkeit zu sichern – weil wir unsere Lagerbestände so aufstocken, dass wir bestens vorbereitet sind, selbst wenn unerwartete Probleme auftauchen sollten.
